The pacific ocean is less than 45 miles away.
Monterey has wonderful weather at this time of the year and plenty of seals.
Santa Cruz has the surfing, volleyball and the boardwalk. Nothing like a
45mph adrenaline rush on that old wooden rollercoaster! There's the Pinnacles just
south on 101. There's Henry Coe. There's Nissane Marks.

For more $: Rooster T Feather's in Sunnyvale has a comedy competition
running the whole week, Bonnie Raitt is in the area (Saratoga and
Livermore), as is Willie Nelson (Saratoga and Livermore). The Dave Matthews
Band is in Berkeley 9/5-9/7. The Giants play the Pirates, the Niners play
against Arizona (9/7) and Oakland faces off against Kansas City (9/8). Who
could miss the opportunity to go to a Raider Nation game and hang out in the
"black hole"?

San Francisco
Twin Peaks offers a panoramic view of the entire city, so it's a good place to start your day. SF Zoo, Museum of Modern Art, The Mission district, and the Castro? A walk on Ocean Beach just south of the Cliff House. Golden Gate Park and the Japanese Gardens. Alcatraz Island (book boat tour a week in advance), or just take the ferry to Tiburon or Sausalito. Bicycle the Golden Gate Bridge - rental bikes available. "49 mile drive" in San Francisco. For families, I recommend the Exploratorium in SF. Walk down to the Financial District to have dinner at an authentic San Francisco restaurant like Tadich Grill on California St. or Sam's on Bush St.. Both are very
reasonable and have great food and service. There are also many great
places to eat in Fisherman's Wharf but they are a bit touristy. The DeYoung Muesum is brand new and supposed to be wonderful!

Stinson Beach or Mt. Tamalpais, Corte Madera/Larson and points north would also be very sweet. Hwy 1, Sausalito, Muir Woods, and you'll cross the Golden Gate Bridge to get there. Avoid the weekends if possible...

Those looking for a great Redwood experience should go to Big Basin. Close to San Jose. Best park around, IMO. Everytime my dad visits he insists we go there. Stop for dinner in Los Gatos or Saratoga on the way back.

For kids, Great America is better than the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, and much closer.

Monterey: Canary Row, Monterey Aquarium-one of the best there is anywhere. Carmel, 17-Mile Drive, and Pebble Beach for the golfers

The Santa Clara County Parks Dept has parks throughout the county.

Yosemite National Park is a 2.5 hour drive from San Jose. Best to take Hwy 140 to the park entrance.
